Situated between Pamplona and the Ebro Valley was incorporated as Denomination of Origin in 1932. Its origins date back century BC, when the Romans built wineries in so-called "fundi" (land of a conquered territory which gave ownership to retired soldiers), but its great heyday was during the Middle Ages with the creation of the monasteries and the Camino de Santiago, who brought new grape varieties and renewed in drawing techniques. Its vineyards extend over 18,000 ha, grown in soil, brown limestone, with low clay content, low organic matter content and good permeability and a variety of climates: Atlantic, continental and Mediterranean, due to the proximity Cantabrian Sea, the influence of the Pyrenees and the Ebro valley comprises five divisions: Lower Mountain: northeast, on the Arga river basins, Aragon and Erga, with 22 populations. Ribera Alta: in the center-south of Navarre, with a total of 26 municipalities. Ribera Baja: in southern Navarre, with 14 municipalities, the most significant both in acreage and number of wineries. Estella: with 38 municipalities along the Camino de Santiago. Valdizarbe: north, comprising 25 populations in different pilgrimage routes linking. Almost 90% of the vineyard is planted with native varieties: Grenache, which occupies more than 30%, Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan (Carignan) and Merlot. While 10% is composed of white varieties: Viura, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Moscatel de Grano Menudo and Garnacha Blanca. Until the 80 Navarre was known for rosé wines, but thereafter begins to emerge as one of the wine areas of red wines. Rosé wines are produced mainly with Garnacha, Viura white wines and Chardonnay wines Muscat based sweets and red, of varying composition and varietal Grenache, Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
