The wine region Catalonia was created in 1999 as the first denomination of origin with a strong regional wine tradition, dating back to 2500 years, combined with the cultural and commercial development in the Mediterranean. First the Phoenicians, then the Greeks and later the Romans developed the cultivation and winemaking to supply the inhabitants of their settlements and their empire. Its purpose was to output the production of small Catalan wine regions. The climate varies according to the different areas of vineyards in the coastal areas dominated by a Mediterranean climate with the influence of strong winds sometimes while the hinterlands enjoy a mix of Mediterranean and continental climate.
Designation of Origin Catalonia extends northeast of the Iberian Peninsula, between the Mediterranean Sea and the Pyrenees in almost 60,000 hectares of surface distributed in more than 300 municipalities of Catalonia, and more than 200 wineries.
