It is located in Extremadura, southwestern Spain, and takes its name from the river Guadiana, which runs through the vineyards from east to west. It is divided into six sub wine: Canamero (in the Sierra de Guadalupe, 850 m altitude), Matanegra (south, with a mild climate), Montanchez (south of Caceres, with continental climate), Ribera Alta (in the flat area of the Guadiana), Ribera Baja (along the border with Portugal, with a mild and rainy) and Tierra de Barros (the largest, with fertile soils). He started being called Vino de la Tierra in the 90s and was finally recognized as Denomination of Origin Ribera del Guadiana in 1999. The vineyards in this land comes from its primitive inhabitants: the Celts, the Lusitanian and especially the Romans, they did prosper grape growing in the area. Years later King Alfonso VIII, who founded the city of Plasencia, recognized in the Charter of Plasencia the S, XIII more than 30 items, with a total of 700, related to wine. But the greatest legacy wine is in the Monastery of Santa Maria de Guadalupe, whose documents were found supplies of vintage and winery. It has a vineyard acreage of 27,000 ha, with 29 varieties of grapes grown: the native Tierra de Barros and Ribera Baja are Cayetana and Pardina, the predominant variety in Matanegra Drink Eve or Saints and the other sub Borba or alarije. Traditionally produced wines for the manufacture of holandas for wineries of Jerez. But in recent years the renewal of the wineries is leading to quality wines, white, rose and red wines with Tempranillo, which are intended for aging in barrels. Aging times of their wines:     Aging: 6 months in oak.     Reserve: 12 months in oak.     Gran Reserva: 24 months in oak.
